North Belongil Beach
Byron Bay
At a glance
North Belongil Beach occupies the northern stretch of Belongil Beach along Bayshore Dr, extending from Byron Bay towards Brunswick Heads. It offers an open coastal setting shaped by sand, surf and the broad length of the shoreline rather than by built facilities or commercial venues.
The beach suits visitors looking for a more spacious beach environment and time beside the ocean. Belongil is recognised as a dog-friendly beach where access is permitted by local signage, making the area relevant for dog walkers as well as people seeking a coastal walk. Conditions can change along the shore, and strong currents are noted as a consideration for beach users.
The northern side of Belongil Creek has a clothes-optional character. This section is separate from the more conventional beach areas closer to Byron Bay, so awareness of the local setting is important when choosing a place to spend time. The clothing-optional area forms part of the beach’s established character rather than a separate managed attraction.
Belongil Beach also has a connection with the wreck of the Wollongbar, which emerges from the sea near the beach’s southern access by the car park at the top end of Jonson Street. The wreck can provide snorkelling opportunities, although that location is closer to the southern part of Belongil than to the North Belongil Beach address. The northern stretch is better understood as part of the longer beach environment that runs towards Brunswick Heads.
North Belongil Beach is a natural, open-air setting for beach walks, time on the sand and coastal observation. It is more suited to self-directed beach visits than to organised hospitality, dining or booked activities. Families, dog walkers and visitors interested in the clothes-optional section can all find a place within the broader Belongil setting, provided local signage and ocean conditions are taken seriously. Swimming requires care because strong currents are part of the beach’s character.
