New South Wales, Byron Bay
Explore the prolific marine life of Byron Bay at "Nuthungulli" Julian Rocks marine sanctuary. Snorkel and freedive with turtles, manta and eagle rays, harmless leopard sharks and thousands of fish!
Swim and snorkel at Julian Rocks Marine Sanctuary near Byron Bay, ideal for snorkelers and freedivers of all levels.
Julian Rocks Marine Sanctuary, known locally as 'Nguthungulli' by the Arakwal people, is one of Australia's top dive sites located just off Australia's most easterly point. Its protected, shallow waters provide an excellent environment for snorkelling and freediving, where warm tropical currents meet cooler temperate waters, creating a rich marine wildlife habitat.
Snorkel alongside whales, dolphins, manta rays, leopard sharks, grey nurse sharks, turtles, and numerous native fish species. A marine biologist guides each trip, pointing out the best locations to observe the diverse marine life. Onboard the vessel 'Wardjum'—Bundjalung for a mythical sea creature—you can also enjoy views of the Byron coastline and often encounter local dolphins en route.
Humpback whales are commonly sighted from June to November, while manta rays and leopard sharks are prevalent between November and May. Quality masks, fins, and wetsuits are provided for all guests. Pool noodles are available for extra support, but flotation jackets are not provided, so swimmers must be comfortable in open water.
